Should coronavirus disease patients be isolated?

People who are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, believe they have come into contact with an infected individual, or know that they have been infected, should self-isolate for the duration of two weeks (14 days). Ten days after symptoms have subsided, it is safe for individuals to reintegrate and return to their daily activities. However, individuals with severe symptoms, such as people with compromised immune systems, should extend this isolation for an extra three weeks (21 days) for a total of five weeks (35 days).

What is the best way to get a test for the coronavirus disease?

There are several different types of tests available to check for COVID-19. The two main tests are:

  • Molecular Test — A molecular test checks for an active infection of the coronavirus. This type of testing involves a PCR test, or polymerase chain reaction test. This test is designed to check for genetic material of the virus and will look for two specific SARS-CoV-2 genes. If only one is discovered, the test will be determined inconclusive.
  • Serological Test — A serology test will check for antibodies present in a person’s bloodstream. These will be present if the virus has been detected by a person’s immune system, to fight off infection. These tests will determine if you have been previously infected with the coronavirus. However, this will not determine if you have an active infection.

Here at American Male Medical, we perform antibody (serology) tests for under $100. Many other health care facilities across the country charge several hundred, even thousands of dollars for these tests. To determine if you have antibodies present, come to American Male Medical today!

What should parents do if they suspect their child to have COVID-19?

Fortunately, and rather surprisingly, children do not seem to be as affected by COVID-19 as adults are. This is great news for parents. Although infection is rarer in children, kids have still been known to become sick. Call your doctor if your child is experiencing cough, sore throat, fever, stomach pain, muscle aches, fatigue, swelling of the hands or feet, or neck pain. Your doctor will determine if your child can be treated at home with rest and relaxation, should come in for a visit, or can have a video or televisit. If their symptoms worsen or become more severe, contact your doctor immediately.

If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, such as breathing problems, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, cough or fever, or have come into contact with someone exhibiting these symptoms, do not worry!
